Constructive criticism is important if you use it the right way. There is a certain way to criticize others, especially with the intention of helping them be better people.
This method doesn’t just bring people down, this method uses kindness with constructive criticism combined. It’s known as the Hamburger Method. Think of a nice, big juicy hamburger. Its 3 parts: the top bun, the meat and the bottom bun represent the 3 elements in giving someone constructive criticism. Firstly, the top bun represents a compliment that you would give before criticizing; commend that person for what they have done right.
The next part of the method is the main part: the meat. The meat of the hamburger represents the main point that you want to get across to the person you’re criticizing. When you criticize someone you want to criticize them in a way that builds them up. Constantly failing to do so over time can cause them to feel emotionally hurt.
The final part of the hamburger method is the bottom bun. This represents the last compliment that you can give to encourage them. By giving them a final compliment, you end your criticism on a good note.
So the next time you are criticizing someone, use the Hamburger Method. Combining kindness with criticism makes the listener more inclined to hear what you have to say.
