Five kids (Matthew, Quentin, Tony, Hooter, and Katie) are having a camp out. When Matthew suggests they take a walk near Lake Levart, Tony tells the legend of the lake. Upon seeing an old rowboat, the 5 friends climb in and are transported back in time to the time of the American Revolution. The friends experience the beginnings of a great nation first-hand as well as the harsh realities soldiers faced during the war. The friends must find a way back to modern times and unlock the secret of the old rowboat. Read “George Washington’s Socks”!
I rated this book 5 out of 5, because I enjoyed how Elvira Woodruff added an element of mystery to this book. She dramatized an important part of the American Revolution and teaches young kids about the realities of war in a kid-friendly way. The characters were between the ages of 8-11 which allowed for some fun adventures in the story.
I think that this book is appropriate for ages 8-11, because these are the ages of the characters in the book.
