Forgiveness

Dear Reader,

Have you ever noticed in the Lord’s prayer that forgiveness is compared to paying a debt? In the part, that says, “As we forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors”. When people say that, they are not talking about debts, but are asking God to forgive them. When we refer to forgiveness, we sometimes use terms that include money.. Forgiveness is relieving someone of their metaphoric “debt”. For example, one of the terms we use are “You’re going to pay”.

This does not mean that someone will actually pay with money, but the person who is saying that means that they will get back at someone. Forgiving someone doesn’t mean to forget something someone did to you. This means that you are not holding something aganist someone.

In the Bible, Jesus told a parable about a king who forgave his servant his debt, and that servant went and ordered another man to pay him the debt that he owed. That man could not afford his debt, so the king’s servant went and threw him in jail. The king found out and commanded that his servant be put in jail until he could pay the debt. If you don’t forgive others, (as mentioned in the Lord’s prayer) God won’t forgive you.
